International Student Orientation Programs (ISOP)

2008-2009


The orientation programs offered by the ISO are designed to provide essential information on maintaining your valid F-1 or J-1 non-immigrant status and are considered mandatory throughout all University divisions. ISOP Volunteers:

ISO is now recruiting volunteers to help with our 2008 International Student Orientation Program! Undergraduates may apply for positions online. Interested Graduate students are asked to contact our Orientation Director, Stephanie Beetle, at sbeetle@iso.rochester.edu.

Undergraduates, at the College:

All new undergraduates must attend the International Student Orientation Program on Sunday, August 24, 2008. Students should arrive on Saturday, August 23rd in order to attend ISOP the following morning. Transfer students (both: SEVIS immigration transfers and academic transfers) are required to attend, regardless of whether they have studied in the U.S. before. Parents are also welcome to attend this program with their student.

The program will include information on immigration, SEVIS requirements, employment on and off campus, Social Security Numbers, taxes, health care in the U.S., safety concerns, and the GLACIER tax compliance system. ISOP also incorporates several social activities and chances to get to know fellow UR students, both international and American.

Undergrads are required to register for ISOP at www.iso.rochester.edu/isopreg. This form will allow you to take advantage of a complimentary airport pickup service and other activities offered during our program. We look forward to welcoming you to campus in August!

Graduate Students:
The College, School of Medicine & Dentistry, School of Nursing, and Warner School of Education

All new graduate students in these divisions are required to attend the International Student Orientation Program on Friday, August 22, 2008. The program will begin at 8:30 AM in Wilson Commons, River Campus.

ISOP will include information on immigration, SEVIS requirements, employment on and off campus, taxes, health care in the U.S., safety issues, and the Rochester Interntional Council, as well as chances to get to know fellow UR students from various departments. Students will also receive information on eligibility and application procedures for a U.S. Social Security Number, opening a bank account, and obtaining a Driver's Licence through the NY Department of Motor Vehicles.

Graduate students should plan on arriving in Rochester no later than the day before orientation. You must check in at the ISO upon your arrival. Please bring your passport, I-20 or DS-2019, and I-94 card with you in order to complete the mandatory immigration check-in procedure.

Eastman School of Music:

All new Eastman School of Music students, both graduate and undergraduate, will be required to attend the Eastman ISOP session on Tuesday, August 26, 2008. ISOP is included as a section of the overall orientation program run through ESM and more detailed information will become available during the summer. Students will be expected on campus prior to Tuesday and will not have conflicting orientation programs to interfere with your attendance. In order to complete the mandatory immigration check-in procedure, please bring your immigration documents to ISOP (passport, I-20 or DS-2019, and I-94 card). Representatives will be available to help with Social Security Number applications for eligible students.

Simon School of Business

International students new to the Simon School are required to attend the mandatory ISOP meeting on Friday, August 29, 2008. ISOP is included with the overall orientation program offered by Simon, with more information available through the school. The session offered by the ISO will include information on maintaining your immigration status, your ability to work in the U.S., and opportunities to complete the mandatory immigration check-in and apply for a Social Security Number, as eligible.

Eastman Dental Center

Eastman Dental Center will offer its own orientation program geared to the special needs of students in the Dental program as they arrive. During this program, a representative from the ISO will present information relevant to international students and assist these individuals to complete their mandatory immigration check-in. Information will be available through EDC.
