International Student Orientation Program

Monday, September 7, 2009

The International Services Office will hold our annual International Student Orientation Program (ISOP) on Monday, September 7th. This meeting is designed to provide essential information on maintaining your valid F-1 or J-1 non-immigrant status while in the U.S. and other important details about life at the University and in Rochester.

Attendance is mandatory for new international students throughout all University divisions. F-2 and J-2 dependents are also welcome to attend and will have a special meeting during the day to learn about their status and opportunities available to them in the Rochester area. Please note that September 7th is a U.S. holiday (Labor Day), so this meeting will not conflict with classes or other required programming.

Topics to be covered during ISOP include:

    • ISO services and programs for UR international students
    • Immigration regulations & requirements to maintain legal student status
    • Employment authorization options under F-1 & J-1 regulations
    • U.S. tax obligations and important legal concerns
    • Applying for a U.S. Social Security Number
    • Traveling within the U.S. and abroad
    • U.S. health care system and insurance
    • Personal safety and property protection
    • Cultural adjustment issues, student life, and classroom expectations
    • Social activities co-sponsored with the Rochester International Council (RIC)

More information will be posted to this website throughout the summer, including time and location details for ISOP. We would like to congratulate you on your admission to the University and are looking forward to welcoming you to campus!
